There are few major sports programs that are more storied or renowned than University of Kentucky basketball. So when Kentucky Head Coach John Calipari asked me to collaborate with him on his new book, "Bounce Back", as a career transition expert, I didn't have to think twice (or even once!)
In "Bounce Back - Overcoming Setbacks to Succeed in Business and in Life" (www.coachcalbounceback.com), "Coach Cal" asks the reader to become part of his bounce back community as he takes you through a series of exercises, tips and advice from his bench of highly-successful people who have survived their own bounce backs. He coaches us on how to deal with the setbacks that we all experience at some point in our lives - whether it is a job loss, a failed relationship, financial difficulties or any new beginning you need to create. Coach Cal knows personally from two very public setbacks about the raw emotion that strikes people when they are down: when he was fired as the head coach of the New Jersey Nets in 1999, and when his Memphis team experienced a devastating overtime defeat in the NCAA Championship Game in 2008.
He is the consummate "Coaches Coach" so I was flattered that he reached out to me for advice and counsel, and pleased that he incorporated so many of the tools, techniques and practical approaches that I use with my career transition clients to illustrate how we can all bounce back from setbacks. Having the right attitude when dealing with life's major impediments and knowing that with every hard knock comes an opportunity to reevaluate and reinvent is the key to dealing with your personal and professional setbacks.
